About the Raymond Williams Society

The Raymond Williams Society was established in 1989 with the aid of a capital sum generously donated by family, friends and admirers. The Society exists to support and develop intellectual and political projects in areas broadly connected with Williams's work.

Essay Competition

The Raymond Williams Society is holding its second postgraduate student essay competition for work grounded in the tradition of cultural materialism. The aim is to encourage a new generation of scholars in this area, especially those who are engaged in discourses and approaches arising from the work of Raymond Williams.

The competition is open to anyone studying for a higher degree (masters or doctoral) in the UK or abroad, either on course, or who graduated no earlier than 31 July 2009. The prize for the winning entry is £100 GBP, and a year's subscription to the Society. The winning essay will also be considered for publication in a future issue of our peer-reviewed journal Key Words: A Journal of Cultural Materialism.

Over the last decade, we have supported or run a range of conferences, symposia and seminars concerned with education, culture, the media, drama, and the future of socialism. If you consider an event you are organising to be consistent with the work of the Society, you may apply for us to sponsor your event.

Membership of the Raymond Williams Society costs £20 a year (£10 unwaged and students). New 2011 members will receive a free copy of Key Words: a Journal of Cultural Materialism (issue 9), advance notification of all Society events, and will have the right to attend the Annual General Meeting, to vote, and to stand for the Management Committee.
